What is OIM?

Overall Impact Metric (OIM)

OIM (Overall Impact Metric) is OddzUp's proprietary player and team evaluation system designed to measure overall on-court impact.

Traditional statistics tell part of the story. Points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks all provide valuable information, but no single statistic captures how much a player truly contributes to winning basketball games.

OIM was created to solve that problem.

Rather than relying on one metric, OIM combines offensive production, defensive value, efficiency, advanced analytics, and contextual performance into one unified rating. The result is a single score that reflects a player's or team's total impact on the game.

Whether you're evaluating MVP candidates, comparing role players, researching matchups, or preparing to make informed betting decisions, OIM provides a clearer picture of overall performance.

Why OIM Exists

Basketball is too complex to measure with one statistic.

A player can score 30 points while hurting their team through poor efficiency or weak defense. Another player may score only 15 points while controlling the game with elite defense, rebounding, passing, and decision-making.

Traditional box scores don't always capture those differences.

OIM was designed to evaluate complete basketball performance instead of isolated statistics.

How OIM Works

OIM analyzes multiple areas of performance to estimate a player's overall impact.

These include:

  • Offensive Production
  • Defensive Impact
  • Shooting Efficiency
  • Usage & Role
  • Playmaking
  • Rebounding
  • Possession Value
  • Pace & Context
  • Advanced Analytics
  • Team Impact

These factors are evaluated together to produce a single Overall Impact Metric.

OIM also separates impact into two specialized ratings:

Offensive OIM (OFF OIM)

Measures a player's offensive contribution, including scoring efficiency, shot creation, playmaking, spacing, and offensive possessions.

Defensive OIM (DEF OIM)

Measures defensive value through rebounding, steals, blocks, defensive positioning, opponent efficiency, and overall defensive impact.

Together, these ratings explain why a player's Overall Impact Metric is high or low.

How to Read OIM

Higher OIM values indicate greater positive impact on winning.

As a general guideline:

OIM ScoreInterpretation
+8.0 or higherElite / MVP-caliber impact
+6.0 to +7.9Superstar / All-NBA level
+4.0 to +5.9All-Star caliber
+2.0 to +3.9Strong starting player
0.0 to +1.9Rotation-level positive contributor
Below 0.0Below-average overall impact

(Score ranges may evolve as the model continues to improve.)

Why OIM Is Different

Many metrics focus on one aspect of basketball.

Some emphasize scoring efficiency.

Others prioritize plus-minus.

Others evaluate only offense or only defense.

OIM brings those perspectives together into one balanced evaluation, allowing users to compare players and teams using a single consistent framework.

Instead of asking:

"Who scored the most?"

OIM asks:

"Who created the greatest overall impact on winning?"
